Enjoy the B & B

The first choice for many guests is relaxing in the B & B. The spacious Great Room, with its wood burning fireplace, is perfect for conversation or curling up with a good book.

The English Pub Billiard Table in the Entertainment Room provides a unique challenge in which women do particularly well.

Feel like a movie? The DVD player in your room can be rolled into any location that is comfortable for you, or you can watch it on the Big Screen TV in the Entertainment Room. Add a complimentary bag of popcorn with a soft drink for even more enjoyment.

Bird Watching

Songbirds, squirrels, deer and other wildlife offer entertainment daily right outside the window. You’ll find a set of binoculars in your room for close up viewing.

The Pond (Grace Lake Too)

With Grace Lake located just down the road, we call our pond “Grace Lake Too”. Configured in a figure “8” with an island, the pond is large enough for a nice trip around by paddle boat or canoe. The grass is mowed all around the pond, making for a nice stroll in street shoes.

Grace Lake Too is stocked with bass and bluegills which are waiting to be caught and released. Bring your fishing equipment or use our cane poles.

Touring the Land

The “trails” of Woodland Trails consists of over 4 miles of private, mowed trails. Enjoy a hike through the woods or snowshoeing in winter. We even have a pair of golf carts for your complimentary use from May through October.

Campfire with S’mores

A large deck with gazebo overlooks Grace Lake Too. Guests enjoy relaxing on the swing, snuggling next to a campfire blazing in the fire pit and making s’mores.

Geocaching

Check www.Geocaching.com for details on this adventurous new family activity – a treasure hunt using a GPS receiver. Look up cashes near Woodland Trails using zip code 54830. Bring your GPS unit or borrow ours.

Shopping Day Trips

Innkeeper Sandra’s favorite shopping is in Hayward, Wisconsin, about an hour from Woodland Trails. Siren and Spooner, Wisconsin are closer and also offer something for every shopper. Even Duluth and Superior are just over an hour away.

Miniature Golf – May through September

Hiking and Snowshoeing

On our land you can enjoy a quarter-mile stroll around the pond or a longer hike over our 4 miles of private trails. For even longer hikes we recommend Governor Knowles State Forest located on the Wisconsin side of the St. Croix. In particular, the Brant Pines Interpretive Trail winds along the St. Croix through an old-growth stand of large red and white pine.

Cross-Country Skiing

Cross-country ski trails are maintained in St. Croix State Park. Also, the Brandt Pines Interpretive Trail in Governor Knowles State Forest is maintained for traditional skiing when snow depth is sufficient. Hoigaards in the Twin Cities has cross-country skis for rent.

Two Casinos

The Hole-In-The-Wall Casino is a rustic facility in Danbury, Wisconsin, just 4 miles from Woodland Trails. Grand Casino Hinckley, 23 miles from Woodland Trails, reminds one of Las Vegas.

Entertainment

Midwest Country Theatre is located in Sandstone MN just 30 minutes from Woodland Trails. This small town movie theatre converted to a live entertainment venue features traditional country music with an “Opry” feel.

Grand Casino Hinckley regularly schedules big-name entertainment.

St. Croix State Park

Woodland Trails B & B is located very close to St. Croix State Park. Minnesota’s largest, the park covers 34,037 acres, which is 53 square miles!

A daily or seasonal state park permit is required to enter. Once inside, activities include:

  • Climbing the old Fire Tower for a panoramic view.
  • Renting a bicycle and touring the six miles of paved trail.
  • Renting a canoe for a two-hour trip on the St. Croix.
  • Swimming in Lake Clayton.
  • Hiking or cross-country skiing on miles of trails.
  • Touring the site of the old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), home to hundreds of park workers in the 1930s.

Bicycling

Wisconsin’s Burnett County, located just across the St. Croix from Woodland Trails, features miles of paved county and township roads for leisurely riding. Bring your bikes or use ours.

We have two special bike routes laid out for your enjoyment. One is an 8-mile tour over Rustic Road 98 featuring lakes, modest hills, curves, and endless scenery. The other is a Round Lake 14-mile tour. For the ambitious, the two routes can be combined for a day-long adventure.

You might also opt for the Gandy Dancer Trail which starts in Danbury, 4 miles from Woodland Trails. The trail heads south over the old Soo Line Railroad line and is surfaced with finely crushed limestone. A permit is required which can be purchased at any of the stores in Danbury.

Motorcycling

Woodland Trails is an ideal destination for bikers from the Twin Cities, St. Cloud, Duluth/Superior or the Eau Claire area. The route to Woodland Trails is entirely over paved roads. Once here, your bikes can be stored inside overnight and shined up with complimentary towels.

Riding from Woodland Trails, you can head across the border into Wisconsin, which many consider to be “bikers heaven” because of the paved roads that gently wind through woods and around lakes.

Canoeing

We are in one of Minnesota’s best areas for canoeing, with two national wild and scenic rivers, the Upper St. Croix and the Namekagon.

Local outfitter, Pardun Canoe Rental, can provide you with shuttle service for a two-hour excursion or a day-long marathon. Call Pardun’s Danbury base for information and reservations at (715) 656-7881

Horseback Riding – May through October

Frontier Trails, located near Frederic, Wisconsin, about 40 minutes from Woodland Trails, offers guided trail rides. Select rides of a half hour, one hour or two hours. Reservations and a liability waiver are required.

Driving directions are:

  • From WI Hwy 35 in Frederic, take Hwy 48 west 3 miles
  • Right on County Line Road & follow it to the “T”
  • Left on Whispering Pines Road about one mile to Frontier Trails.

To meet and talk with horse enthusiasts, the Tamarack River Horse Camp is located just five miles up the road from Woodland Trails. On most weekends from May through October, the camp is full of people who love talking about their animals.

The Rhino Arena in Hinckley holds horse-related events indoors year around.

History – Memorial Day to Labor Day

The Hinckley Fire Museum recalls the Great Fire of 1894. The museum is located in Hinckley on County Hwy 61, six blocks west of I-35.

Two locations celebrate the fur trade of the early 1800s in this area:

The North West Company Fur Post is operated by the Minnesota Historical Society. The Post islocated in Pine City, 1.5 miles west of I-35 at exit 169.

Forts Folle Avione, operated by the Burnett County, Wisconsin Historical Society, is located on Burnett Country Road “U”, less than five miles from Woodland Trails.

Golfing

Our favorite local course is Fox Run Golf Course located near Webster, Wisconsin, about 10 minutes from Woodland Trails. Fox Glen has 2,700 yard 9-hole regulation course and a 9-hole short course.

Voyager Village, located east of Webster about 40 minutes from Woodland Trails, has a 6,600 yard 18-hole course plus a par 3 course. The beautiful 18-hole course is designated as a wildlife sanctuary by the National Audubon Society.

Grand National Golf Club is a 6,900 course located next to Grand Casino Hinckley.

Siren National Golf Course, located in Siren, Wisconsin, 19 miles from Woodland Trails, is the areas most challenging course. Call for rates and tee times at: 715-349-8000

Fishing

Our private pond, named Grace Lake Too, is stocked with bass and bluegills. Bring you equipment or use our cane poles for some catch-and-release fun. No fishing license is needed because we have a hatchery permit.

For lake fishing, dozens of good fishing lakes are located just across the Wisconsin border, with Yellow Lake being one of the best. Boats and pontoons are available for rent.

Rent a Pontoon Boat

Enjoy a day cruising on Clam Lake near Siren, Wisconsin. Advance reservation is required. Call Big Mike’s Outdoor Sports Shop at (715) 349-2400.

Snowmobiling & Four-Wheeling

The Minnesota / Wisconsin and Gandy Dancer Trails are nearby and offer endless miles of adventure. We have room to park a snowmobile or ATV trailer.

Wild Animal Photography for Amateurs!

Yes, for the adventuresome, Minnesota Wildlife Connection is located just 30 minutes from Woodland Trails. Owners Lee and Sandy Greenly house dozens of native animals at their farm on the Kettle River. Photographers from all over the world come to photograph timber wolves, coyotes, fox, cougar, bobcat, lynx, black bear and other animals in natural settings.

Hunting Preserve

Bear Creek Pheasant Hunting Preserve is located nearby on 370 acres of land managed for wildlife. Call owner Dale Blowers at (320) 384-6954 for further information.

Take an Airplane Ride!

If you have never taken a sightseeing ride on a small airplane, it’s an adventure to remember. A qualified pilot from Hawk Aviation in Rush City, Minnesota will take you up from their home field, which is a 45 minute drive from Woodland Trails, or they will pick you up at the airport in Hinckley or Siren, Wisconsin.
